The Black Drop Coffeehouse

This Ain't Yo Mama's Spro!

The Black Drop is the explosive result of the midlife crisis between an aging goth and a stay-at-home mom which unfolded on the Internet in early 2002. Their friendship formed fast through their mutual blogs. It didn't take them long to figure out that their complimentary skill sets could fulfill a mutual dream: a place to build meaningful affinities while drinking some absolutely kick-ass coffee.

The meaningful community building was the easy part - they found a quirky corner downtown and their blog friends supplied all the enthusiasm and elbow grease needed to hit the skids running. Little did they know that the kick-ass coffee would be so much more than just a thing to purchase and resell, but a complicated, ancient commodity requiring skill to select, roast, and convert into the heavenly emulsion commonly known as espresso. Their pursuit of excellence in coffees and espresso drink building threatens to become a lifelong adventure, and one they gladly embark upon!

What is Good at the Drop:

The Drop looks for beans that curls their toes. If it curls our toes, that is what we buy, but not without due diligence. We care about where our coffee comes from. If you have questions about our coffees regarding anything from its social impact to its shelf life, don't hesitate to ask anyone behind the counter - everybody knows their stuff.

Currently espresso coffees are sourced from Hines Public Market Coffee in Vancouver, B.C. This is the same coffee that Bronwen Serna used to win the 2004 United States Barista Championship. These coffees are what are known as relationship coffees. This means that the roaster sources his beans directly from the farm and pays them above fair trade prices. We love Hines coffee because it's amazing. It produces a beautiful rusty crema that oozes out of the spout like honey. It tastes as great as it smells, and that's the whole point.

Drip coffees come right from Bellingham's own Moka Joe Coffee. Moka Joeís coffee is special because it is all 100% certified organic, certified Fair Trade, shade friendly, and kosher (not to mention delicious!) Moka Joe is one of only ten roasters in the nation that can make this claim. We rotate approximately eight different beans, from smooth custom Moka Joe blends to single origins with uniquely hightlighted notes.

TEA. You won't find any crappy dust or fannings in a prepacked tea bag that's been sitting in a cellophane wrapped box at the Drop, oh no. All teas at the Drop are loose-leaf, black, oolong, green or botanicals sourced from Bellingham's own Spice Hut. Teas are kept in dry, airtight, stainless tins to prevent the essence of the tea from disintegrating. Tea is more than a drink; it is an experience encompassing everything from the flavor to the aroma to the hue of the liquor. The Drop's staff is well versed in dosage and temperature variances, so youíll never get a bitter cup, long as you do what they say. ;)
